HILL COUNTRY POP ART
Construction has been completed! We gave a facelift to this home located in the Dominion neighborhood in San Antonio. The design aesthetic of this residence is Hill Country Pop Art. Large scale abstract sculpture, masses of bright blooms, and a variety of stone materials combine to create the client’s dream home. We designed a new walkway system, entrance columns, sculpture placement, and stone walls that complement the existing architecture. The dramatic before image and after images shows the power of a proper landscape design. Follow us to see the future phases.
house of steel
"You all are masters of design" is the compliment our wonderful client gave us at the conclusion of this residential rehab.
The plant palette is simple, layered, edited, and highly focused on different plant textures. Cor-ten steel planters and edging add a beautiful contrast to the layers of green. Custom circular trellises invite you to the open lawn and outdoor entertaining spaces in the rear garden. Ipe wood and a custom trellis was added to provide the perfect framework for espaliered magnolias. A new green wall, built-in ipe wood bench, and trellising was added to create the perfect shaded afternoon spot and the perfect backdrop for a custom water feature. The new ipe wood pool deck is surrounded by new layered plantings and the perfect placement of potted plants. Our clients were a pleasure to work with and we hope they continue to love their "new" home.

COASTAL CONTEMPORARY
Our clients tasked us with incorporating a newly acquired adjacent lot into their existing beachfront property on South Padre Island. The client’s aesthetic is supremely modern with little to no accouterments. A curtain of sea grape creates privacy and a sense of enclosure. Palm trees placed on a rigid grid are surrounded by dune grasses in complete harmony. Expanses of ground-cover weave throughout the design to unify the space. Our design allows the clients to rest and reflect in an outdoor space that perfectly complements their home.
french country modern
The construction on this custom-built French country style home is complete. Classic design elements include geometric shapes, neatly trimmed hedges, gravel and paver pathways, and a simple but elegant color scheme. Crape myrtle, Japanese blueberry, Italian cypress, and waxleaf ligustrum were a few of the trees incorporated into the landscape beds that offer freeze hardy vertical elements. The courtyards include water and fire features that add a touch of romance and evokes the feeling of the French countryside.
TROPICAL RETREAT
The garden at this private residence required extensive editing to maximize it's potential. Many plants were removed to highlight the existing features and specimen plants. The client was a critical part of the project team, in that, adjustments during construction and material selections to suit his desires and expectations were imperative for a successful project.
southwest sculpture park
The construction on the Southwest Sculpture Park is complete. This art collector’s estate was transformed by the careful placement of native plants and stone to enhance the wide variety of outdoor sculptures. Sustainable themes of xeric plants, reusing existing materials, and reducing lawn area were blended into the existing retaining wall system. The marriage of Southwest style and a fabulous art collection create an exceptional outdoor space. The dramatic before and after images show the power of a proper landscape design.
spanish escape
We popped into this project that was completed about a year ago to check on the health and progress of the plantings. The rosemary has been non-stop growing, the monarch garden is flourishing, and the whale's tongue agave have filled in nicely. The small courtyard area delivers a big wow factor with the addition of terra cotta pavers, spa, and a new privacy wall with details to match the architecture of the home. Sit back, relax, and enjoy your weekend everyone!⠀
ENCANTO HACIENDA RANCH
Boulders, barrel cactus, and beach pebble welcome you to this ranch in South Texas. The wide variety of alpaca, cattle, and rescue dogs enjoy the carefully curated views in and around the main house. Mass plantings of native muhly grass, mistflower, zexmenia, persimmon, and stemodia create a lush aesthetic without utilizing much water. Raised cor-ten steel planters in the center of the circle drive provide quickly accessed vegetable gardening space. Bird, bat, and butterfly habitat is provided by the Texas sabal palms, milkweed, and turk’s cap.
PINERIDGE COURTYARD
Stepping into this courtyard melts your worries away. The custom water feature signifies it is a place of peace and tranquility. The client requested a low maintenance space that coordinated with the architecture of the home. We developed a design for a classic style courtyard with a hint of French countryside. We integrated existing elements with a travertine fountain, limestone stepping stones, green island ficus, waxleaf ligustrum topiary, flap jacks, blue chalk sticks, and a white bougainvillea . The running water from the fountain creates a white noise that reduces the impact of nearby traffic. This courtyard has zero lawn, is water efficient, and is low maintenance. But best of all, the clients love their new space.
MEXICAN MODERN
This courtyard features a fabulous green wall that includes the pattern in the existing block wall as an inspiration. The pattern was turned on an angle to adjoin the seating area with the river bed sculpture. A dry fountain planted with agaves and barrel cactus anchor the space. The river bed sculpture is manipulated so that the space appears larger than it is. Two different types of stone were added to negate the need for lawn but still provide a surface that water will drain through. Bands of stone were inset into the seating area that align with the central water feature. Blue ledge stone, crushed granite, and sandstone are combined with creeping fig, orange esperanza, and purple fountain grass.
rESACA RETREAT
This custom home features a formal entrance and circle drive surrounded by palm groves and a resaca (oxbow lake) . The new lagoon style pool is nestled between a sun deck, fire feature, and outdoor kitchen. The kitchen is adjacent to the raised vegetable garden to provide fresh herbs for all your grilled treats. HDT developed the cohesive site plan and an all tropical planting plan. Time for a dip in the pool!
Endless summer oasis
Construction has been completed. Endless summer in Alamo Heights. Extend your summer fun by enhancing your outdoor space with a pool, outdoor kitchen, and fire feature. Our clients were a pleasure to work with and we hope they continue to love their "new" home.
SILVERBELL SANCTUARY
Cacti and pergolas and blue bunnies, oh my! This whimsical space is dominated by a cedar timber pergola painted in a color that evokes sunsets in the Southwest. Blue leaved cacti and agave abound throughout the space. Mass plantings of frog fruit, wooly stemodia, orange zexmenia, and gulf muhly grasses soften the heavy use of crushed granite, stepping stones, and stone retaining walls. Specimen night-blooming cereus, green sotol, and century plants are combined with upcycled natural stone pavers, moss rock boulders, river rock, and crushed granite. The blue bunnies are a crowd favorite that move quickly if you aren’t paying attention.
